July 7, 1981
At left: American Steal 20 years ago. Above right to left, Tom, Mike, Urbs and Rob. Where is Tom, and his girlfriend?

July 7, 1981 through the screams of the crowd chanting "Put your instruments away!", The American Steal Band debuted. "Mad Guitar" Mike, Steve "Bam-Bam" Urbs, "Bitchin' and Bassin" Tommy Smith, and the undisputed king of rhythm, "The Rob Bob" performed live for the first time at the Water Works Entertainment Complex.

The bands savage act of raw untapped energy, electrified the wet crowd. It will always be a night to remember for the few hundred who waited hours for the bands debut. With limited tickets sales for fear of the crowd size, American Steal stole the hearts of those lucky enough to attend.

With songs like Bobby Sands, Rock and Roll Will Never Die, and Southside Boys drifting through the crowd, the legend of American Steal was cemented in the minds of a few. With the release of the singles "Daddy They Stole My Kielbasa" and "Mr. Policeman, It's not a Weapon, It's only a Sock", the bands legend continued to grow. Hiding away in whatever basement would welcome them, the boys continued writing and practicing the music that pushed the musical edge. Weekend after weekend the roadies led by the infamous Doug Slosher, may he rest in peace, loaded the sparkling blue vinyl sound equipment into the customized 78 Custom Cruiser to pursue the unrelenting dream of words and music.

Show after show the band learned to dodge the hurled projectiles, till one day they realized that their dream was ahead of it's time. Gathering for one last show at Tangiers in Akron, Ohio, the boy's after a grueling set sat together on sacks of rotten potatoes and realized that their dreams of super stardom were over. With the five words, "Boys, I sold my drums" Bam Bam Urbs finalized the end, choosing love over music. Years later looking back, all realized America and the world just wasn't ready for American Steal's music.

It has been years, but for a few demented souls, the music never died. The eighties live on, and now thanks to a hunch, and way too much idle time, part of the now good 'ole boys are recording again. "Mom! Put the shotgun away, we're not moving back into the basement." Late at night alone in the castle of Mike's Place, the dream has been awoken. Whether it was too much beer or the aging mentality of the former cast of American Steal, the boy's are laying down tracks for their 2nd release in 2 years. No date has been announced, no rumor has been confirmed. National Enquirer...we have no comment, let the words and music speak for themselves, and so the story continues..... stay tuned!
